The Benefits of Mushrooms in Coffee, Powders & Gummies
The benefits of mushrooms go way beyond what you might think of when you picture a mushroom on a pizza or tossed into a stir fry. Over the last few years, mushrooms have made their way into all kinds of wellness products. I take them in different forms - mushroom coffee, powdered mushroom blends in smoothies, and even gummies when I want something quick and simple.
I noticed regardless of which form I use, the same group of mushrooms are in each: lion’s mane, reishi, turkey tail, chaga, shiitake, cordyceps, maitake, and more. Each one has its own set of benefits, and when they’re blended together, they cover a lot of ground - from energy and focus to immune support and stress relief.
The Mushroom List
What I’ve noticed is that no matter which form I take – gummy supplement, coffee blend, or powdered mix – it’s pretty much the same group of mushrooms showing up again and again. Each one brings something different to the table:
- Lion’s Mane – well known for supporting focus, memory, and overall brain health.
- Turkey Tail – helps strengthen the immune system and packed with antioxidants.
- Shiitake – supports heart health and may help keep cholesterol in check.
- Reishi – called the “mushroom of immortality,” helps with stress relief, better sleep, and immune support.
- Chaga – loaded with antioxidants, it’s often used for its anti-inflammatory benefits.
- Cordyceps – thought to boost energy, endurance, and even exercise performance.
- Maitake – another immune supporter that may also help with blood sugar balance.
When these are blended together, you get a nice “team effect” of mushrooms working on your immune system, energy, focus, and stress levels all at once.
Since it’s usually the same mushroom mix across the gummies, powders, and coffee, I don’t stack them all together in a single day. If I’ve added a scoop of powdered mushrooms to a smoothie, I’ll skip the supplement or mushroom coffee. That way I’m still getting the benefits without overdoing it.
Mushroom Coffee
Coffee is still part of my morning routine - I’m not giving up my Keurig anytime soon. But every now and then I’ll switch things up with mushroom coffee. It’s not meant to replace my regular cup, just something I add in here and there for the extra benefits. The flavor is different - a little smoother, earthy but mild - and it’s such a nice flavor that I don’t even need creamer like I do with a regular cup of coffee.
My husband tried it too, but he went straight for a full scoop right out of the gate. That didn’t sit well with him, and he ended up with headaches. When I started with just a half scoop, I didn’t have that issue. It seems like easing in slowly makes it a lot easier for your body to handle, and you still get the benefits without the side effects.
Caffeine vs No Caffeine?
Does your mushroom coffee contain caffeine? Some brands mix mushrooms with coffee (the ones I have are mixed with an Arabica coffee), so you still get that caffeine boost (just a bit smoother). Others are caffeine-free and use only mushrooms. If you’re sensitive to caffeine or like to enjoy a cup later in the day, make sure to check the label so you know what you’re getting.
Possible Side Effects
Most people do fine with mushroom supplements, but just like anything else, there can be side effects. A few worth mentioning:
- Digestive changes – bloating or stomach upset when you first start
- Headaches – especially if you take too much too quickly
- Allergic reactions – rare, but possible (if you’re allergic to mushrooms in food, skip the supplements too)
- Medication interactions – some mushrooms may thin blood or affect blood sugar, so if you’re on medication, check with your doctor first
- Special considerations – if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, or have autoimmune issues, it’s best to be extra cautious and check with a healthcare provider before starting mushroom supplements
Everyone’s body is different, so what feels great for one person might feel not-so-great for another.
Storage Tips
Mushroom powders and coffee blends can get clumpy if they’re exposed to moisture. I keep mine tightly sealed (usually what they come in is sufficient) and stored in the pantry - that way they stay fresh and mix in easily without turning into a brick.
Mushrooms and Beauty Benefits
Mushrooms aren’t just good for energy and immunity - some of them are showing up in beauty products too. Reishi and shiitake are often used in skincare because of their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which may help calm redness and support healthier-looking skin. Chaga is another mushroom that’s packed with antioxidants, helping to protect skin from environmental stress.
And since mushrooms can also support hydration and balance from the inside, they’re becoming a popular “glow from within” ingredient in both supplements and topical beauty products.
Benefit of Mushrooms
The benefits of mushrooms are many, but they don’t work like an overnight miracle. It’s more of a steady, supportive addition to your routine – helping with energy, focus, immunity, and balance over time.
Whether you’re sipping mushroom coffee, mixing powder into a smoothie, or grabbing a gummy supplement, you’re basically getting the same powerful mix of mushrooms with overlapping benefits. Start slow, pay attention to how your body responds, and let these natural fungi give you a gentle boost in the background of your everyday life.
