How many drops of essential oil should you put in a diffuser? There isn't one number that works for every diffuser or every room. The size of your diffuser matters, but so does the size of the room, how strong you like the scent, and the essential oils you are using.

That's the reason behind the essential oil diffuser drop calculator. It gives you a general starting point based on your diffuser size, preferred scent strength, room size, and whether you're using a single essential oil or a blend.

How Many Drops Go in a Diffuser?

You will often see recommendations to add a certain number of essential oil drops to a diffuser, but that doesn't always tell the whole story.

Three or four drops may be plenty in a small diffuser sitting in a bedroom or bathroom. Put those same drops in a 500 mL diffuser in a large living room and you may hardly notice them.

Your diffuser's water capacity is a good place to start, but several things can affect how much essential oil you may want to use.

Diffuser Size

The larger the water reservoir, the more essential oil you will generally need.

A 100 mL diffuser may only need a few drops, while a 300 or 500 mL diffuser will usually need more. That's why I don't like using one drop recommendation for every diffuser.

The calculator takes the diffuser's water capacity into consideration rather than treating every diffuser the same.

Scent Strength

Some people prefer just a hint of essential oil in the room. Others like the scent to be much more noticeable.

Neither is wrong.

Choosing your preferred scent strength gives you a better starting point than simply being told to add a certain number of drops.

Start lighter when trying a new oil or blend. You can always add another drop the next time you diffuse.

Room Size

Room size can make a surprising difference.

A diffuser in a small bedroom or bathroom doesn't have as much space to cover as one sitting in a large living room or an open floor plan.

The same essential oil blend can smell fairly strong in one room and much lighter in another, even when you're using the exact same diffuser.

That's why the calculator also asks about the size of the room where you'll be diffusing.

Single Essential Oils vs. Blends

You can use the calculator whether you're diffusing one essential oil or a blend of several oils.

If you're using a blend, the calculated number is the total number of drops, not the number of drops for each essential oil.

For example, if the calculator suggests six drops, your blend might contain:

• 3 drops lavender
• 2 drops sweet orange
• 1 drop cedarwood

That's six drops total.

You can divide those drops however you like or follow one of your favorite diffuser recipes.

Some Essential Oils Are Stronger

Not all essential oils have the same scent intensity.

Peppermint, eucalyptus, clove, cinnamon, and similar oils can become quite noticeable with only a small amount. That's why the calculator includes an option to tell it when you're using stronger essential oils.

If you're unsure, starting with fewer drops is usually the better choice. Let the diffuser run for a little while before deciding the scent isn't strong enough. Essential oils can become much more noticeable once they've had time to disperse throughout the room.

Scaling an Essential Oil Diffuser Recipe

Keeping the Same Essential Oil Blend

The recipe scaling tool calculates the total number of drops you need. You'll still want to keep the oils in approximately the same proportions as the original recipe.

If the scaling tool tells you that your diffuser needs a larger total amount, increase the individual oils while trying to keep the same general balance.

Don't worry if the math doesn't divide perfectly into whole drops. Diffuser recipes don't have to be exact down to a fraction of a drop. Adjusting one oil up or down slightly is usually the easiest solution.

Essential Oil Drops Aren't Exact

There's another reason not to get too caught up in making diffuser drop counts perfect: essential oil drops aren't a standardized measurement.

The size of a drop can vary depending on the oil, the bottle's dropper insert, the temperature, and how quickly the oil comes out.

Thicker oils may come out very slowly, while thin oils can suddenly give you two drops when you only wanted one. If you've used essential oils for very long, you've probably had that happen more than once.

Essential oil can also collect around the dropper insert or around the neck where the cap screws onto the bottle. Give the bottle a quick wipe before replacing the cap if you notice oil there. It helps keep the bottle clean and prevents oil from building up around the threads.

Can You Use Too Many Drops?

Yes. Adding more essential oil doesn't necessarily make a diffuser blend better.

A scent that starts out pleasant can quickly become overwhelming when too much oil is used, especially in a smaller room. Strong aromas can also bother some people and may cause headaches, nausea, coughing, or irritation.

If the scent becomes uncomfortable, turn the diffuser off and ventilate the room.

It's also a good idea to check the instructions for your diffuser. If the manufacturer recommends a particular amount of essential oil, take that into consideration as well.

Diffusing Around Children and Pets

If you're using your diffuser around children or pets, the number of drops isn't the only thing to consider.

Some essential oils may not be appropriate around young children or certain animals. The specific oil, concentration, ventilation, and how long the diffuser runs can all matter.

Always check the safety information for the individual essential oils you're planning to use, and make sure pets are able to leave the room if they want to.
