Tasty Peanut Butter and Jelly Smoothie

I wasn't trying to make a peanut butter and jelly smoothie when I tossed everything into the blender. I was simply looking for something filling that used ingredients I already had in the kitchen. I grabbed some peanut butter, fresh strawberries, a banana, honey, almond milk, and a handful of ice cubes, pressed the blend button, and took a sip.

The first thing that came to mind was, "This tastes just like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich!"

Peanut Butter Jelly Smoothie

The peanut butter gives it that rich, creamy flavor while the strawberries become the "jelly." The banana adds a smooth texture and a little extra sweetness, and the honey brings everything together without making it overly sweet. It honestly tasted like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich in smoothie form, with just enough banana to let you know it's there.

Now, it's become one of my favorite quick smoothies whenever I want something that's both satisfying and refreshing.

Why This Smoothie Works

The peanut butter creates a rich, creamy base while the fresh strawberries provide the bright, fruity flavor that reminds me of strawberry jelly. Banana naturally thickens the smoothie and gives it a smooth, creamy consistency without overpowering the other flavors. A drizzle of honey enhances the fruit, and the ice makes it cold and refreshing.

The result is a smoothie that's creamy, fruity, and delicious.

Peanut Butter Jelly Smoothie Recipe

For all my smoothies, I use a Vitamix but you can also use what you have on hand.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons creamy peanut butter
  • 1 cup fresh strawberries, stems removed (I may use a little more)
  • 1 ripe banana
  • 2 to 3 heaping tablespoons strawberry Greek yogurt
  • 1/2 to 1 teaspoon organic maca powder (if you're not sure about this ingredient, start with 1/4 teaspoon and add to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon honey (adjust to taste and this is an optional ingredient)
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk (you can use vanilla almond milk if that is what you have on hand)
  • 1/4 cup to 1 cup ice cubes

Directions

  1. Add the almond milk to your blender.
  2. Add the peanut butter, strawberries, banana, yogurt, honey, and ice.
  3. Blend until completely smooth and creamy.
  4. Pour into a glass and enjoy.

I don't usually measure ingredients very carefully when I make smoothies. If I want it a little thicker, I toss in a few more strawberries or an ice cube. If it's too thick, I simply add a little more almond milk. Smoothies are one of those recipes that are easy to adjust until they're just the way you like them.

Easy Ways to Customize the Peanut Butter Jelly Smoothie

One of the reasons I enjoy making smoothies is that they're easy to customize. Depending on what I have on hand, I'll sometimes add one or two nutritional extras without changing the overall peanut butter and jelly flavor.

These are all optional ingredients but some of my favorites include:

  • Organic maca powder
  • Protein powder
  • Collagen peptides
  • Chia seeds
  • Ground flaxseed
  • Rolled oats
  • Greek yogurt

I did used organic maca powder, it blends in nicely and adds a mild, slightly nutty, earthy flavor that goes nicely with the peanut butter.

Tips for the Best Peanut Butter Jelly Smoothie

  • Use ripe bananas for the best natural sweetness.
  • Fresh strawberries create a bright, fresh flavor, but frozen strawberries work just as well.
  • If your smoothie is too thick, add a little more almond milk.
  • If it's too thin, add a few more ice cubes or a little frozen banana.
  • Taste before serving and add a little more honey if you'd like it sweeter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use frozen strawberries?

Yes. Frozen strawberries make the smoothie even thicker and colder, you may need a splash of extra almond milk.

Can I use a different milk?

Absolutely. Dairy milk, oat milk, soy milk, coconut milk, sweetened almond milk, or cashew milk all work well in this recipe.

Is honey required?

Not at all. If your banana is very ripe, you may find the smoothie sweet enough without it. You can also substitute maple syrup or leave the sweetener out entirely.

Can I make this ahead of time?

Smoothies always taste best right after blending, but you can refrigerate leftovers for several hours. Give it a good stir or shake before drinking since some separation is normal.

Peanut Butter Jelly Smoothie Goodness

Sometimes the best recipes are the ones you aren't planning to make.

This peanut butter jelly smoothie came together completely by accident, but it's one I'll definitely keep making. It's creamy, refreshing, naturally sweet, and somehow manages to taste remarkably close to a classic peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

If you're looking for a quick breakfast, a filling snack, or simply want a new way to enjoy fresh strawberries and peanut butter, give this smoothie a try. You might be just as surprised as I was after that very first sip.
